Eshkol, Levi

Eshkol, Levi
(1895-1969)
   Israeli politician. He was born in Oratov, in the Ukraine, and settled in Palestine in 1914. After World War I he became director-general of the ministry of defence. He represented Mapai in the Knesset from 1949. In 1951 he joined David Ben-Gurion's government as a minister of agriculture and development and the following year he became minister of finance. In 1963 he succeeded Ben-Gurion as prime minister, remaining in office until his death.
